A great night at Epicure

25/08/2017

We recently held the fourth in our series of Around Town Huddersfield networking events, hosted by Simon and Kit at Epicure Bar and Kitchen.

Epicure is a small independently run coffee shop situated on Huddersfield Ring Road, opposite The University of Huddersfield. Two floors of shabby chic decor and bare wooden floors create a charming and quirky atmosphere where you can enjoy speciality coffee and a selection of light lunches and brunches.

The name Epicure is rather unusual, although no longer used in modern English, it’s derived from Greek and refers to “a person who takes particular pleasure in fine food and drink”. Owner and founder of Epicure Simon Frewin could definitely be described as an epicure. When he spoke about his passion for coffee, you could see the enthusiasm emanating from him, it almost made me feel a bit guilty for the freeze-dried coffee I drink on a daily basis.

A collection of local business people met for the Around Town event in the upstairs section of the cafe, including Sam Melton from the Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, Chris Gary from Trainstorm Media Ltd, and Rob McKay the Teleman. Special mention was given to Ajaz Ahmed, who received the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list this year. Ajaz Ahmed is a Huddersfield-born-and-bred Digital Media Guru and was instrumental in the foundation of Freeserve, which brought the internet to the masses in the UK during the dot com bubble of the 1990s.

David Heathcoate, Business Development Manager at Steadcross, kicked off the night’s proceedings by welcoming everybody and introduced the concept of “business socialising” as opposed to formal networking events. Around Town Huddersfield wants to create a relaxed, informal atmosphere for local business people to get together. Sovereign Wealth donated a bottle of (personalised!) champagne, which was the prize for the business card in the jar. This was won by

David then introduced Simon Frewin, who spoke about his passion for coffee and his journey to becoming the owner of Epicure Bar & Kitchen. Simon had originally trained as an electrician before starting his jet-set rugby union career which took him to New Zealand to play professionally. While living in Nelson, on the South Island of New Zealand, Simon was inspired by the number of independently-run coffee shops. Indeed, he told us that the big brands such as Starbucks and Costa were actually the least popular in the town!

Simon is a self-confessed “coffee geek”, detailing all the variations of beans and brewing methods you could employ to change the flavour and texture of the drink. I had no idea coffee could be so complex! But, Simon discovered that not everybody shares his passion for coffee, and so diversified his business by adding food to the menu as he rebranded in September 2016.

Like many independent cafe owners, Simon prides himself on sourcing quality, local and fresh ingredients. They even make their own condiments, such as hollandaise sauce and ketchup!

Like many of the business-men and -women who come along to the Around Town Huddersfield events, Simon also shares a passion for Huddersfield. He wants to create a quality independent coffee shop in the town centre, the likes of which you would normally find in the surrounding villages such as Lindley or Honley. He describes his cafe as “quality hospitality and just something different” as he sings the praises of his staff for their friendly yet knowledgable approach.

Simon’s passion was infectious, with many guests determined to come back. This feeling was only reinforced by the knowledge that Epicure Bar & Kitchen are open Friday & Saturday evenings for dinner and they’re hosting a series of “international tapas” nights, where they serve small plates of food themed around a particular country or locality. The next event for this will be a Mexican themed night held on the 28th and 29th July 2017.

The next Around Town Huddersfield event will be on Thursday 19th October and hosted by Rosenbauer UK in Meltham. Rosenbauer is the largest, and often referred to as the absolute best, manufacturer of fleet and equipment options to Fire & Rescue Services across the planet. Now based permanently on UK shores in Meltham, Rosenbauer UK deliver a completely Anglicised range of Fire Service trucks and equipment.

We’re delighted that Managing Director Oliver North will be our host for the evening.
