Celebrating Christmas with Around Town

14/12/2017

Huddersfield businesses came together on Thursday 14th December to meet new business connections, drink mulled wine and listen to Christmas carols as Around Town Huddersfield hosted a special Christmas networking event in the Hygge Tipi, St George’s square.

Huddersfield Winter Festival

Following the success of the six previous Around Town events in 2017, this event was a celebration of the hard work and effort put in to organising the events by Aye! Creative and Crowther Chartered Accountants, along with Sovereign Wealth and Steadcross.

For those of you who live in Huddersfield, you may have noticed that a large Tipi has popped up in St George’s Square and has been serving mulled wine and delicious snacks to hungry (and thirsty!) shoppers and commuters throughout December. This is thanks to Huddersfield Live, a local initiative supported by Stafflex Ltd and The Star Inn. The team at Huddersfield Live have worked incredibly hard this year to put together Huddersfield’s very first Winter Festival, inspired by the success of Christmas Markets in neighbouring towns such as Leeds and Manchester. The Winter Festival this year includes a Hygge Tipi, which serves warm drinks and snacks for you to enjoy in a quirky, cosy atmosphere around a warm fire. Perfect for when you’re sick of Christmas shopping!

Our evening of Christmas celebrations, networking and nibbles was introduced by Oli Smith from Aye! Creative (as is becoming tradition with Around Town’s networking events!). Oli mentioned the success of previous networking events and highlighted the forthcoming events at Owen Scott Tailors and Valli Opticians. He then went on to introduce Huddersfield Live, who organised the Huddersfield Winter Festival and provided the venue for the night’s event.

Huddersfield Live was set up by Sam from The Star Inn and Stafflex Ltd’s Poppy Stahlein back in 2015 and aims to organise and promote Huddersfield events. Sam spoke passionately about setting up the not-for-profit organisation to help boost the local economy in Huddersfield, and get people actively engaged in supporting the town. This year, the Huddersfield Live team took over the running of the Huddersfield Food & Drinks Festival, which is growing in popularity and is a real highlight of the summer for many!

Guests then heard from Laura at Totally Tipi, who briefly described her business and what lead to the collaboration with Huddersfield Live to set up the Huddersfield Winter Festival.

Totally Tipi have brought Hygge Tipi’s to Huddersfield, as well as Leeds and Halifax this winter. Laura spoke about the Danish concept of “Hygge”, describing it as “doing everyday things in a very nice way”. She explained to the group of local Huddersfield businesspeople that the majority of her tipi hire business revolves around summer weddings, where a tipi can provide a relaxed outdoor venue with flexibility for different numbers of guests. Totally Tipi have worked with high-quality restaurants such as The Three Acres as well as well-known locations such as Canon Hall Farm and the Great Yorkshire Showground.

Introducing Hygge Tipis to Yorkshire means that Totally Tipi can use their fantastic tipis throughout the year, bringing an additional boost to the business and ensure that they can provide secure jobs for their experienced staff. As well as collaborating with Huddersfield Live, Laura and her team at Totally Tipi have been working with the recently-refurbished Piece Hall complex in Halifax and The Magical Lantern Festival at Roundhay Park.

The evening was finished off with a live performance from Amy Crowther (daughter of Steve and Michelle at Crowther Chartered Accountants). Amy is an accomplished musician who is currently studying at Leeds College of Music. She performed a selection of Christmas carols and pop songs alongside fellow students, leaving everyone feeling in an increasingly festive mood! Guests continued to enjoy the “Hygge” atmosphere and refreshments for the rest of the evening!

The next Around Town Huddersfield networking event will be hosted by Owen Scott Tailors on 25th January 2018. Owen Scott Tailors offer a bespoke tailoring service in Huddersfield town centre, offering the highest-quality fabrics combined with Scott’s own stylish take on traditional menswear. If you want to join us for the first of 2018’s networking events, please register as soon as possible as places for this event are very limited. As usual, we will be having drinks and nibbles from 5.30pm and a guest speaker telling their business success story.
