In 1852, or thereabouts, in August of that year, Charles Crossley was out on the moors when his dog disturbed something very peculiar hiding in the heather. Being a forthright chap, Mr Crossley managed to flush out and capture the strange beast which turned out to be a large ape. The rumour was that the ape had been seen living around the caves at Ramsden Rocks. Sometime earlier a circus had visited Holmfirth and the poster showed, amongst other things, apes trained to ride ponies. From then till now the area known as Ramsden Rocks is referred, by ‘local people’ in the know, as Monkey Nick.
We meet at the Bridge Inn at 5pm leaving at 5:30pm and arriving back by 8pm for food and a pint for those not way-laid by any big ape like creatures en-route!
